American Red Cross
Oregon Mountain River Chapter
Our Mission
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Movement, will provide relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

American Red Cross Disaster Services

Each year across our country, the American Red Cross responds to more than 73,000 disasters, including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous material spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters.

The Oregon Mountain River Chapter responded to 114 local disasters last year. In Central Oregon, we respond to family fires, communities threatened by wildfire, flood, storm, search and rescue support requests and more. We work closely with a variety of public and private sector partners for planning, preapredness and response. We support national relief operations with trained and experienced responders from our communities.

We Need You to Help us Help!

We are a volunteer driven, private humanitarian agency. Although the American Red Cross is not a government agency, its authority to provide disaster relief was formalized in 1905 when the United States Congress chartered the Red Cross to:

"Carry on a system of national and international relief in time of peace and apply the same in mitigating the sufferings caused by pestilence, famine, fire, floods, and other great national calamities, and to devise and carry on measures for preventing the same."

The Charter is not only a grant of power, but also an imposition of duties and obligations to our nation, to disaster victims, and to the people who generously support its work with their donations.

Red Cross Disaster Relief focuses on meeting people's immediate emergency disaster-caused needs. When a disaster threatens or strikes, the Red Cross provides shelter, food, and health and mental health services to address immediate, basic human needs. Further, Red Cross Disaster Recovery Assistance is available to affected  individuals and families to enable them to resume their normal lives.

The Red Cross also feeds emergency workers, connects those affected with concerned family members outside the disaster area, provides blood and blood products to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources.
